Little Sparrow
When we heard about Little Sparrow—a Michelin Guide-recognized restaurant just a stroll from our house, we were thrilled. Then we saw the words: French Bistro. Cue the heartbreak.
When you're twintolerant, you don't exactly dream of warm baguettes, creamy butter, or raclette cheese service—those are the gut villains we avoid. Still, we spotted some potentially safe options and decided to give it a shot. And wow—were we blown away.
The indoor-outdoor bistro effortlessly nails the atmosphere—think sophisticated marble accents, gold finishes, mix-and-match china and glassware, fresh florals, and perfect moody lighting. You genuinely feel transported to Europe.
As we launched into our usual twintolerant spiel—a rapid-fire list of allergies, substitutions, and cautious questions—we braced ourselves for the usual: a raw dish, a plain salad, maybe the grilled fish. Definitely not the warm French bread basket (cue the deep sadness).
But to our surprise, our server was incredibly knowledgeable, answering every allergen question with ease and confidence—not a hint of confusion or hesitation.
Then—a miracle.
Not only did they offer gluten-free bread, it wasn’t the frozen, dry, crumbly kind with that unmistakable “yep, this is gluten-free” taste (IYKYK).
They special-order individual gluten-free French loaves, warmed and served like the real thing.
On the verge of tears, we each ordered one with a side of olive oil—hesitant, almost guilty—as if even saying “we’ll have the bread” was too good to be true.
Honestly, the meal could’ve ended right there—and sometimes it does. We’ve absolutely returned just for a cocktail and that bread. Perfection.
But on this visit, we ventured further.
Sure, there were some obvious twintolerant no-gos—dishes we knew couldn’t be altered without compromising their soul. The French onion soup, chicken schnitzel (which looked insane), and bolognese were sadly off-limits.
Still, plenty of safe, flavorful options, including one that nearly knocked us off our chairs: thick-cut, triple-fried frites—from a gluten-free dedicated fryer. (We triple-checked. Then triple-ordered.)
Beyond the gluten-free loaves and those unforgettable frites, we treat Little Sparrow like a tapas spot—ordering a spread of our favorite hors d’oeuvres to share (truly the best way to eat). Our standouts? The crudo, Aleppo shrimp, and filet américain—all twintolerant-friendly and absolutely delicious.
Bar Blanc
After falling in love with Little Sparrow, we had a feeling we’d be just as smitten with its sister spot, Bar Blanc—conveniently located just upstairs and powered by the same safe kitchen.
It carries the same French charm and incredible quality, but with a fun, focused twist—it’s a steak friterie.
The menu? Steak (served with salad and those glorious gluten-free loaves), pommes frites, and cocktails. That’s it. All twintolerant-friendly and offered at a reasonable prix fixe—simple, satisfying, and exceptionally well done.
💡 Twintolerant Tip: NEW in 2025 - While Bar Blanc was previously walk-in only, you can now book a table through OpenTable (finally!)
Summary
If you think gluten-free and lactose-free means compromise, think again. Between the impeccable flavors, thoughtful allergen care, and cozy European vibes, Little Sparrow and its sister spot, Bar Blanc, have quickly become our go-to escapes for meals that feel truly special—twintolerant or not.
